Every November, we take a family trip. In 2023, we planned an adventure to Yosemite National Park, and the historic Ahwahnee Hotel (fun fact: its lobby inspired The Shining). What I didn’t expect was finding a federal courthouse… in the middle of a national park.

Wait—There’s a Courthouse Here?

It was a long day of flying across the country from Florida to Fresno, then driving about 2.5 hours to the Ahwahnee. We were just a few miles away from the hotel when we came to an intersection with this sign. I could not believe that, in the heart of a majestic national park, there was a federal courthouse.

A courthouse? Here? Naturally, I said, “We have to go.” And my husband—who knows me very well—didn’t even try to argue. Detour it was.

The Yosemite Federal Courthouse: Small, Remote, and Stunning

Tucked into Yosemite is the Yosemite Federal Courthouse, part of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. And when I say small—I mean tiny. I've seen houses larger than this building.

But its also beautiful. Surrounded by towering granite cliffs, trees, and that unmistakable Yosemite landscape.

Not everyone in my family was thrilled about the stop (I’ll let you guess who), but I was fascinated.

Inside the Courtroom: A Unique Federal Courthouse Experience

The U.S. Marshals were kind enough to let us step inside and take a look at the courtroom. And it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a place like this—warm wood, natural light, and architecture that actually fits the park instead of competing with it. It felt less like a government building and more like an extension of the park itself.

A Small World in the Legal Community

Then came the part that really surprised me. We learned that Magistrate Judge Helena M. Barch-Kuchta—who is assigned to this courthouse—spent part of her career in the Middle District of Florida.

Right in our backyard.

It was remarkable to find ties to home at what has to be the most remote (and diminutive) federal courthouse in the country...

Why This Yosemite Courthouse Visit Stood Out

This stop wasn’t planned. It wasn’t on the itinerary.

But it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip.

Because it’s a reminder that the law isn’t just in big cities and high-rise buildings. It’s everywhere—even in the most remote, beautiful corners of the country.

And sometimes, you find it when you least expect it.

Follow the Gavel Gals Across America Series…

This is one stop in our Gavel Gals Across America series — a legal travel series born out of 25+ years of arguing cases in federal courts across the country. Somewhere along the way, I started keeping track of every courthouse I'd set foot in — and realized I wanted to visit all of them.

So I'm documenting it. Every courthouse. Every circuit. Every trip — whether it's a case, a conference, or a family vacation that happens to pass one. And now I'm hooked.

Stay tuned… there's more where this came from.
